Breakfast
The breakfast at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa has received mixed reviews from guests. While some described a fabulous breakfast with a fantastic selection and excellent options, others complained about the lack of choices and slow service. The buffet breakfast had everything on offer, but the organization was slow and some guests felt the food wasn't hot. The Full English breakfast was not up to par for some with uncooked sausages and hard black pudding. Others praised the superb self-serve breakfast and the cooked breakfast cooked to perfection. However, cold plates, small portions and unhygienic food were some issues some guests encountered at breakfast. Despite that, many guests enjoyed the lovely food, which included options to order off the menu. The breakfast setting was very pleasant, though some felt the plates and hot food weren't hot enough. The breakfast ended reasonably early for some guests, while others felt breakfast was too late for them.

Dinner
The Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa offers a mixed dining experience, according to guest reviews. While some reported well-presented and delicious evening meals, others found the menu repetitive and lacking in quality. Drinks were also deemed overpriced by some and there were reports of short-staffing leading to slow service. On the other hand, many guests enjoyed the food, describing it as amazing, tasty and outstanding. The set dinner menu did not change during one guest's six-night stay with only six main course options every night. Breakfast received mixed reviews with some finding it disappointing while others found it good. Despite some negative feedback on the restaurant, the dining room itself was praised for its wonderful view. Overall, guests reported a range of dining experiences with some finding the evening meal very good or lovely and presented well, while others felt that the ingredients were poor quality or the food tasted mass-produced and expensive.

Rooms
The Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa boasts comfortable, spacious rooms with lovely decor and amazing views of the lake from some rooms. While some rooms needed refurbishment or updates, most were still clean and comfortable with spacious bathrooms and comfortable beds. However, some guests noted issues such as a lack of ventilation, dirty windowsills, dampness and dated decor. Some rooms had been recently modernized, but others needed new carpets and furniture. Despite these drawbacks, the hotel's ambience and fantastic location with views of the lake from the bar, lounge and restaurant, make it a great choice for travelers.

Beds
The Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa boasts a variety of beautifully furnished rooms with comfortable beds. The majority of guests found the beds to be extremely comfortable, making for a restful night's sleep. Some guests however, found that the King-size bed was actually two beds pushed together, which made for an uncomfortable experience. The pillows provided were in abundance but not for everyone, as some guests found them to be too big, while others complained they were too soft. Additionally, there were some complaints of saggy mattresses. That being said, guests on the whole had positive things to say about the beds with one guest describing them as "gorgeously comfortable." The rooms were also reported to be clean and comfortable, as were the linens. A particularly highlight was the use of blackout curtains which provided a great sleeping environment. Overall, the central location, beautiful views and comfortable beds make Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa a great choice for those seeking both rest and relaxation.

Cleanliness
The Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa has received mixed reviews regarding its cleanliness. Several guests have complimented the hotel for being beautifully clean and completely immaculate. They found the rooms to be pleasant and clean with friendly staff. The spa was described as beautiful and clean, providing a great experience. However, some guests observed areas in need of attention and maintenance, including dirty cups and cutlery on tables, old towels and robes and walls marked with splashes. Some guests even mentioned a damp smell in the hotel. The dining area had filthy windowsills and the bathroom needed updating. Guests have also noticed a difference in the carpet's cleanliness in some rooms with areas that looked quite dirty. The hotel's cleanliness needs improvement in some areas to provide a better experience for guests.

Staff
One thing that consistently stood out in guest reviews of the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Many guests mentioned how welcoming and informative the staff on reception are with some singling out individuals like Andy and Mr. Hamed for particular praise. The staff both in the bar and at breakfast were often described as pleasant and taking an interest in guests. Even in instances where there were complaints about slow service or the hotel being short staffed, guests would still describe the staff as hardworking and attentive. However, there were some negative reviews that mentioned a lack of customer service, uncooperative and rude staff and even staff being sarcastic to guests. Spa
The Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa is a perfect place for those seeking relaxation and indulgence. The spa received high praise from many guests who described it as great, amazing and brilliant. The treatments were a particular highlight for some with one guest saying they were the best they've ever had. The leisure pool and spa were excellent and the pool and sauna were both very nice. However, some guests found the spa to be basic and limited with a dated sauna and no jacuzzi. The reception staff were also described as strict. Despite these minor disappointments, overall, the spa was lovely and relaxing. Some guests enjoyed the pool, sauna and steam room, while others thought additional facilities like a hot tub or jacuzzi would have enhanced their experience. Nevertheless, the spa remains a great feature of the hotel that many guests enjoyed.

Pool

Guests have found the pool to be relatively warm and enjoyable with some describing it as a wonderful and peaceful experience as they swim while looking out at the lake. The pool bar and breakfast have also received excellent reviews. However, some guests have complained about the cold temperature of the pool, especially during winter, which has prevented them from enjoying it. Nonetheless, families, couples and adults looking for some relaxation time will enjoy the pool and sauna area, which unfortunately closes early at 6:30 pm.

Parking
Guests at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa have mixed feelings about the parking options available at the hotel. While some found the parking facilities to be convenient and easy to access, others were disappointed by the high prices charged for parking with many feeling that it should have been included in the cost of their stay. Some found that the car park was not on site and had to be accessed through a bus ride or a walk, which was inconvenient. Additionally, some found the entrance to the car park was too tight for larger vehicles. Guests who opted not to use the hotel's parking facilities found cheaper options nearby, but even those who did pay the high prices for parking found the cost to be excessive. The hotel should consider including parking in their package and make it more accessible and secure for their guests.
