Questionnaire
Year erected: 1630
What is the history of the property?
The building is one of the two public Ottoman baths (hammams) of Rethymno, which was leading from the outer walls of the city to the fortress entrance of the Venetian Castle. It was converted from a Venetian mansion right after the occupation of the Venetian Rethymno from the Turks. It was functional until the population exchange in 1925, when it became a traditional family bakery and house. Today it is used as a traditional guesthouse. The choice of its location shows its importance to the Ottoman world.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The architectural style of the establishment could be classified in the barrier between the classical Ottoman and its Westernization style.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The property is located in the center of the old town, where hundreds of old Venetian and Turkish houses exist. Very near one can find the old Mosque with its minaret, the Venetian gate, the Venetian fortress and the Rimondi fountain.
Has restoration work taken place?
The building is fully restored with traditional techniques and materials as defined by the archaeologists, in order to highlight it and to heal its traumas of the past.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The building preserves the classic division of a typical hammam, with minor differences to its symmetry. It consisted of the warming room and the hot room, with two small rooms included. Each area included a big dome, supported on pendentives, from which the one (warming area) was torn down, in 1925, in order to build a house floor, probably from the bakery owners. It also seems that the Turkish architect was planning to expand the public bath, probably for the division of men and women, but the task was never completed.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
The establishment is inscribed as a monument of the town, named as "ΟΘΩΜΑΝΙΚΟΣ ΛΟΥΤΡΩΝΑΣ" (Ottoman Baths) according to the sentence ΥΠΠΟ/ΑΡΧ./Α1/Φ4/3/22285/3006 (ΦΕΚ 658/Τ.Β/23-05-2000)

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 13th century
What is the history of the property?
The origins of the castle date back to the Middle Ages.

Built on the remains of ancient Roman settlements, for centuries the castle was the home of the lords of the Friulian nobility.

From the 16th century, illustrious families took turns in his property: first the Dorimbergo, then the Rassauer and then, for more than 300 years, the powerful Della Torre Valsassina family, descendants of Charlemagne.

Count Luigi Torriani hosted Giacomo Casanova in 1773, who -fleeing from Venice to avoid a prison sentence- found refuge and tranquility to write and appreciate the wines, which he defined excellent in his Memoirs. The romantic literary walk with signs where you can read his phrases about love, women, friendship and life, is at your disposal in the historic park. In addition to Casanova, many other illustrious personalities, rulers and generals, poets and musicians have stayed in Spessa, such as Lorenzo Da Ponte, the famous librettist of Mozart, and Emanuele Filiberto D'Aosta. The atmosphere that still surrounds the manor today recalls those times: the arts, prestige, the sweet idleness of life in the countryside.

Today, Castello di Spessa, towering among the gentle hills of Collio, is the heart of an elegant Golf Wine Resort and SPA, owned by the Pali family.

The estate was built by the Venetian Patrician Family called “Zen" in the beginning of 1700. In that époque many Venetian families used to come and colonize the Delta, cultivating the land, building estates and shooting lodges.

Then, the Estate passed on from the Zen to the Marchesi Guiccioli, and then to the Casalicchio/Avanzo.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
Venetian plant
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Back to 1400, in that exact spot there already was a small altar probably dedicated to the Saint Margherita. This is testified by a stone tabernacle reporting the date 1459 – now placed inside the chapel.

The Chapel faces the River (all churches in Polesine face the River Po), and is beautiful in its simplicity and austerity. On the altar there are two lovely statues, representing Mary and the Archangel Gabriel during the “Annunciation” . These two statues, together with others you will encounter around the garden, all date back to 1700, and were created by the Bolognese School of the famous Bonazza.
Has restoration work taken place?
Ca' Zen's History, a Venetian villa located in the Po Delta nature reserve
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
Romantic and tempestuous is the love story between Contessa Teresa Gamba (married to Alessandro Guiccioli) and the English Poet Lord George Byron. Teresa’s husband, irritated by the love story between Teresa and the Poet, sent his young wife to Ca’ Zen (then a sad and malaric spot – as described in his diary which still belongs to the family). Yet the distance between Teresa and the brilliant frivolous Venetian life, did not subdue the love between Teresa and the Poet, who came to visit Teresa in Ca’ Zen, and from this home wrote some of his most beautiful lines.

"STANZAS TO THE PO"

"River ! that floweth by the antient walls where dwells the lady of my love!"
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The Belgium king and queen stayed at Ca' Zen. Different important guests were here (Italian actors, Italian singers, British actors and so on).

In the old cellars, located in the wing which has been closed since 1923, there is now a big reception room which can hold up to 120 guests and is ideal for meetings, conferences, events, and special happenings.

A WONDERFUL SETTING FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

The inside of the Villa, the huge red brick aia, the Chapel, stables, immense barns, the gardens, and cottages, located in “the middle of nowhere” right next to the river, are a perfect setting for photographic shoots (landscapes, portraits, fashion, brides, nature).
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
Since 2004 Paolo Fratta Pasini and his wife Maria Adelaide Avanzo have begun serious restoration on a few of the buildings on the estate: an engrossing ,fascinating, but extremely challenging project, partly achieved today: the eastern and western wing of the Villa were restored in 2007 and 2012, one of the cottages, and the portico were restored in 2007 and 2005...There is still a LOT of work ahead!

In the east and west wing of the Villa there are beautiful bedrooms, both charming and authentic, on the ground floor there are also reception rooms for meetings and special events., a perfect location, along with gardens, grounds and portico!

One of the cottages has been turned into a charming self catering holiday home, ideal both for Italians and foreigners who wish to enjoy a holiday "in the country"...very near the sea side!"
