What is the history of the property?
The first mention of Rosenegg Castle dates back to 1187. The manor house, located in Fieberbrunn, Austria, today a 4-star hotel, is of medieval origin and is made up of three structures joined together and high towers soaring into the sky.
Family Hotel Schloss Rosenegg has stood the test of time and the many vicissitudes associated with its history. Its walls have borne witness to the stories and destinies of those who lived there and left their marks. Famous people such as Countess Margarethe Maultasch or Napoleon, for example, lived here.
It was the Rosenberg family’s residence from 1555 to 1760. Baron Rosenberg, a faithful friend of Nostradamus, maintained intensive correspondence with the scholar, physician and astrologer.

What is the history of the property?
JAN HARMSZ SCHAT

In 1674, east of the current town of Bonnievale, on a farm nestled under the towering Langeberg Mountains, Johannes Harman Jansz Potgieter was born.

Johannes married in 1714, and the farm appears on the grant of 1723 as Jan Harmsz Schat (treasure)- from which it was apparently corrupted to Jan Harmsgat. In 1731 we find the grazing rights being granted to a famous hunter, Jacobus Botha. His hunting career was brought to an end a couple of years later, when he shot a lion, and the lioness (which he had not seen) attacked and mauled him, leaving him for dead. Botha recovered but was never able to hunt again and in 1734 Governor de la Fontaine made a freehold grant to Botha, for services rendered, of the farm Jan Harmans Gat that he was then occupying. The farm was described as “vier uur te perd van die dorp Swellendam”

Jacobus Botha lived to the age of 90, dying in 1782, and his 12 sons gave him 190 grandchildren.

The farm is situated along the slopes of the Langeberg, between the mountain and the Breede River. The modern road from Swellendam to Ashton runs along this beautiful valley.

In 1789 the farm passed into the hands of Hermanus Steyn de Jonge. In 1765 he had married the widow Margaretha van Staden, and by the time the farm was occupied by him, he was already a man of some stature in the area. In addition to farming, he also did some Trustee work and sat on the District Council of Swellendam.

In 1795 the farmers of the District rebelled against their Dutch masters, and declared themselves independent of the Cape Government. Hermanus Steyn was chosen as the president of the new republic, which lasted only a short while before the British assumed control of the Cape Colony, and Swellendam again reverted to their original status. Hermanus Steyn lies buried on the farm Jan Harmsgat in a small plot marked by a granite gravestone, which can be seen a few hundred meters from the main house.

A grandson of the old President, Gideon van Zyl, changed the name of the farm to the gentler name of Nooitgedacht. A cousin, one Piet van Eeden, again changed the old building with its three gables under thatch. He removed the upper floors and rebuilt the house with a corrugated iron roof.

The original wine cellar and old slave quarters were retained, but again the thatch was replaced by corrugated iron. This has subsequently been changed back to thatch and is the form in which the buildings now exist.

The wine cellar reminds us of the days when Jan Harmsgat was a large wine farm. The owner of the farm during that time, one F.J. van Eeden was a member of the Legislature, and inherited the farm from old Gideon van Zyl.

One day, while sitting in a meeting of the legislature, he became so angry about a proposed excise duty, that he had all the vineyards cut down, and planted orange trees in their place.

Jan Harmsgat became famous for it’s oranges, which thrived in this climate. Four giant old orange trees, which had been planted by Hermanus Steyn, de Oue, produced wagonloads of oranges for 150 years, but were then cut down by van Eeden, and 5 dozen orangewood chairs made from the timber.

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1617
What is the history of the property?
When you walk through the doors of Hôtel Reisen — you don't travel back in time. You merely stroll into the memoirs of an eclectic, flamboyant past.

The hotel is set directly on Stockholm's scenic waterfront and uses the historic Old Town (Gamla Stan) as its picturesque and telling backdrop. The building's foundation dates back to 1617 — a time when Gustavus Adolphus the Great was the King of Sweden and the world had just invented telescopes and steam turbines.

For centuries, the building has served numerous functions. The name originates from the Dutchman Fredrik Reiss who ran a semi-legal coffeehouse in the 1750s. But — it's also been used as storehouse, drinking den, and an epicentre for some of the most prominent poets in European history. In here, Carl Michael Bellman was reciting «Drink out thy glass!» whilst chirping up naughty beauties. Fritiof Nilsson Piraten was using room 705 and six half-bottles of Château Margaux to find an exit to his writer's block. The Russian-American Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Brodsky, locked himself in a corner room drafting poems to make cracks in the Soviet Empire.

And, the list goes on as their nights were long.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Yes, the property is located in the middle of the historic Old Town Stockholm.
Has restoration work taken place?
The hotel underwent a full renovation that was finished 2021.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
As early as the 1690s, the cross vaults were built down in the basement, which today houses the hotel's relax, and forms part of the old city wall. Those who worked on the construction of carrying bricks were often women and were called wall snails. One of these women put her footprint, size 37, in a stone sitting on the wall in one of the arches for public viewing. Shortly after these arches had been built, the castle Tre kronor was ravaged by fire in 1697. To a large extent, the castle burned down, but Reisen's vault lay underground and thus survived well, despite its proximity to the castle.

Our conference room and separate chamber Per Brahe originates from the boat S/S Per Brahe that were built in 1908.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
Carl Michael Bellman has mentioned the building in his poems.

What is the history of the property?
Dovecliff Hall is a building steeped in history. A Georgian manor house dating back to 1790, it was built for the family of Thomas Thornewill, the owner of a forge converted from Stretton corn mill.
In the 19th century, it was owned by Lord Bass who made many contributions to Burton, including the Ferry Bridge.
The grounds in the late 1840s covered 39 a.Thornewill was succeeded in 1843 by his son Edward (d. 1866), whose widow Mary continued to live at Dove Cliff until her death in 1880. In 1881 their son, Edward John, sold the estate to William Joseph Smith of Alvaston , who also bought the family's iron works at Stretton. Smith died in 1891, and in 1897 his widow Frances sold Dove Cliff house with 55 a. to Hugh Spencer Charrington, a Burton brewer, already the tenant. Charrington died apparently in 1921, and the house remained unoccupied in 1928. It was a hotel in 1932, but seems to have been a private house again by 1936 when was bought by Colonel Sharpe. Known as Dovecliff Hall by 1987, it was opened that year once more as a hotel, still its use in 1999.

Built of red brick with stone dressings on a square 5bayed plan, the two-storeyed house has a hipped roof, sash windows, and external doorways with Ionic colonettes. The north projecting porch was added, probably when the house was re-ordered internally in the 1890s or early 1900s.
