Bed & Breakfast with EV Charging Stations
Historic Bed & Breakfast
Year erected:1899/1900
What is the history of the property? Major city growth and development of railroads made it necessary to expand the city of Salzburg by the end of 19th century. The former swamp-area outside the city walls was dried during that time, the train station of Salzburg was built and around it, a whole new quarter, all built in 1900 style, was developed. The Adlerhof is one of those buildings and - at least in Salzburg - a rare example of this building style.
During WWII the main train station was heavily bombed and altough the station itself was not destroyed, most buildings around it were. The Adlerhof building, miraculously was not harmed, so it stayed in the same style. The building hosted a cafe during the whole time of its existence, so what is now used as the breakfast room is the original 1900 cafe-location (very beautiful!)
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built? Fin de siècle - 1899 / 1900
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings? Near the Adlerhof is the main train station of Salzburg - which was also built by the end of 19th century by a scholar of Gustave Eiffel (it is a very beautiful example of 1900 train station architecture!). The historic city core of Salzburg (baroque style buildings) is just about 15 - 20 walking minutes away.
Has restoration work taken place? Yes. Breakfast room (old 1900 café) was undergoing restauration works in 2020
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building? Beautiful stucco works outside of the building and inside as well
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning? no particular guests, but after WWII the former café in the site was said to be mainly used by the American G.I.s who were stationed in Salzburg to secure the area.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past? no special events
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status? it is landmark protected building (no changes of the facade and parts of the interior are allowed; demolition of the building is forbidden)
Would you describe your property as (or has it ever been in the past) a:
Town House and Café
Is there anything that you would like to highlight, add or clarify? Our house is very different from the usual architecture and history, which made the rest of Salzburg so famous. Rather it is a part of modern Austrian history that is resembled here in our house - but the more ancient parts of Salzburg are just a short walk away ;)

Additionally, the location is suitable for those embarking on the Alpe-Adria cycle path or other day trips, making it a preferred choice for cyclists and active travelers. Free parking, a rarity in Salzburg, further enhances its appeal, particularly for those traveling by car.

Breakfast
Adlerhof's breakfast has received mixed but generally favorable reviews from guests, who have shared various experiences highlighting both the positive and a few areas for improvement.
The breakfast offerings are consistently described as good, tasty and delicious with many appreciating the diverse options available, ranging from fruits, vegetables and cereals to cold cuts, cheeses and a unique scrambled egg station. Guests enjoyed the continental style and noted it was extensive, sufficient and varied with plenty to choose from to meet different tastes and dietary requirements, including options for vegetarians. The breakfast room itself received praise for its cozy ambiance and stylish decor, often described as a lovely and elegant setting, enhancing the dining experience.
However, some guests felt the breakfast could be more varied and less monotonous, particularly for longer stays. There were mentions of the selection being basic or not as extensive compared to other European hotels and a few felt it lacked high-quality baked goods or that certain items like fresh pastries and rolls were missing or not at their best. The breakfast room, while charming, was occasionally reported as crowded, suggesting a need for better space management.
Overall, Adlerhof's breakfast offers a delightful start to the day with a rich, varied buffet and a pleasant atmosphere, though some guests might find room for incremental improvements in variety and freshness.
Dinner
Guests staying at Adlerhof consistently highlight the convenience and variety of dining options available around the hotel. Many appreciated the presence of a mini-kitchen in the rooms equipped with a refrigerator, basic utensils and a stove, enabling simple meal preparations for dinner and breakfast. For those preferring to dine out, the hotel is well-situated with plenty of nearby restaurants, including an outstanding pizzeria called Levitamente that is just a few feet away.
The reception staff are noted for their helpfulness, providing recommendations on local eateries and attractions. With a whole street of food stalls nearby, guests can explore various local flavors. A popular jazz bar and other restaurants in close proximity add to the lively dining atmosphere. Although there is some noise from a nearby popular meeting point late into the night, the abundance of dining options ensures guests have a variety of enjoyable dinner choices during their stay.
Rooms
Adlerhof offers an eclectic mix of room experiences with a range of options from cozy, traditionally styled spaces to modern, recently renovated accommodations. Many guests appreciated the clean and spacious rooms, which were found comfortable for families and groups. The family rooms, in particular, were noted for their size and suitability for larger parties, often featuring additional amenities like kitchenettes, fridges and ample seating areas.
Despite some mentions of outdated or older furnishings, the hotel's rustic charm and modernized bathrooms garnered positive remarks, making for a cozy stay. Guests were pleased with the cleanliness and maintenance of the bathrooms, many of which have been recently updated. The beds were typically described as comfortable and the rooms were generally seen as functional with sufficient amenities.
However, some consistent concerns included noise levels, particularly from rooms facing the street and the small size of certain rooms which could feel cramped, especially for larger groups. There were also sporadic mentions of cleaning inconsistencies and occasional musty smells. Some rooms had issues with insufficient soundproofing and outdated interiors, although these were balanced by praise for the hotel's quiet atmosphere in rooms facing the courtyard.
Overall, Adlerhof seems to blend Austrian traditional aesthetics with modern comforts, making it a suitable choice for travelers seeking a simple yet accommodating stay close to the city’s attractions and transport links.
Beds
Travelers frequently highlight the comfort of the beds at Adlerhof with many mentioning a comfortable and cozy experience. A significant number of reviews describe the beds as soft and inviting, which contributed to a good night's sleep. Several guests appreciated that the beds were tidy and clean, adding to the overall comfort of their stay. Some specific mentions include beds with a charming old Austrian look and spacious, modern options that were quite comfortable.
However, there are also recurring remarks about certain beds being old and noisy, creaking with every movement and occasionally mattresses being too soft or sagging in the middle. A few reviews noted the presence of worn-out or thin mattresses that could benefit from replacement. Some guests found the pillows too soft or not supportive enough with a couple of mentions of pillows being lumpy or flat.
In summary, while the general consensus leans towards a positive sleeping experience at Adlerhof thanks to the comfortable and clean bedding, there are occasional issues with older, creaky beds and softer or worn-out mattresses that should be addressed to ensure consistent comfort for all guests.
Cleanliness
Guest reviews of Adlerhof highlight varying opinions on the cleanliness of the hotel. Many guests appreciated the very clean rooms, bathroom facilities and common areas with some describing the spaces as spotlessly clean, adequately clean and well-kept. Positive mentions also included the clean and comfortable ambiance, as well as the old Austrian charm of certain areas. Daily cleaning routines and regular tidying up also contributed to an overall positive guest experience.
However, there were notable criticisms regarding inconsistencies in cleanliness. Some reported finding dusty areas, dirty bathrooms and leftover trash from previous guests. Issues such as visibly stained curtains, clogged shower drains and insufficient vacuuming were recurrent themes in the negative feedback. Another common point of dissatisfaction was the condition of some rooms with comments about dated decor and the need for renovations.
Overall, while many guests found Adlerhof to be clean and comfortable, there were significant concerns about the thoroughness of cleaning practices, indicating a need for improved housekeeping standards. The mixed reviews suggest that guests’ experiences of cleanliness at Adlerhof can vary with some finding it impeccably clean and others encountering issues that detracted from their stay.
Staff
The staff at Adlerhof have made lasting positive impressions on guests with numerous reviews highlighting their friendliness, helpfulness and politeness. The receptionists, day and night, have been consistently praised for their warm welcomes, attentiveness and ability to communicate well in English. The WiFi is described as fast and reliable with some noting a strong and well-distributed signal. High-speed internet is available, allowing guests to stay connected seamlessly. However, there are mentions of occasional issues, such as the WiFi being patchy or disconnecting intermittently. Some guests found the internet speed to be slower at times and a few experienced spotty connections. Despite these occasional drawbacks, the overall feedback highlights a generally satisfactory WiFi experience with the convenience of free access adding to the appeal for many travelers.
Parking
Adlerhof offers a mix of convenience and challenges when it comes to parking. The hotel provides free on-site parking, which many guests appreciate as a significant advantage. This complimentary service often plays a key role in choosing the hotel. Private parking is available directly behind the building, adding a sense of security and ease. Free parking is accessible in the courtyard and backyard, albeit sometimes limited. The availability of an EV charging station is a modern amenity, catering to electric vehicle owners.
However, the parking spaces tend to be quite narrow and the limited number of spots means that arriving early or being lucky is crucial to securing a space. Some guests have found the parking situation difficult or tight, although they generally managed to find a spot eventually. Despite these challenges, the free parking, often monitored by cameras, remains a valued feature. While parking on the street is an option, it's usually free only until 9 am.
Overall, Adlerhof's complimentary and secure parking options add value, even with the occasional space constraints.
EV charging stations
Adlerhof offers EV charging stations for guests, providing a convenient amenity for those traveling with electric vehicles. Additionally, free parking is available in the hotel's yard, enhancing the overall ease of travel. However, some reviews noted inconsistencies with a few mentioning the absence of charging stations or non-functional units. Despite these issues, the availability of an EV charging option appears to be a notable feature for many visitors.
Historic
Adlerhof exudes historical charm, captivating visitors with its authentic Austrian decor and traditional flair. The family-run hotel, housed in a beautiful historic building dating back to 1900, is full of character, offering a real piece of old Salzburg. The breakfast room, featuring stunning blue velvet benches, radiates the splendor of the 19th century and has preserved its historical charm with maintained internal decor and original features. Rooms are furnished in a rustic style with traditional furniture, delicate decorations and even wooden light switches, enhancing the feeling of stepping back in time.
Guests appreciate the antique look and traditional style, though some note minor inconveniences like cool rooms with non-adjustable radiators. Despite being a bit removed from the historic center, the location remains central, just a 15-minute walk to the heart of Salzburg and a 5-minute walk from the train station. The hotel's traditional quality and high standards in authenticity make it a fascinating stay for those craving historical elements and a connection to the past, making every visit to Salzburg feel special.
Dog Friendly
Adlerhof has garnered favorable attention for its dog-friendly facilities, making it an appealing choice for pet owners. Guests have appreciated the hotel's policy of allowing dogs with pets warmly welcomed and various accommodations made for their stay. Notably, some guests praised the lack of additional charges for small pets, although others mentioned a nominal one-time cleaning fee of 15€, which is considered reasonable for Salzburg.
The property's environment is notably dog-friendly with guests pointing out the convenience of taking walks with their dogs around the area. Additionally, pet owners noted the ability to dine with their dogs in the dining hall and the spacious rooms that comfortably accommodate both people and pets.
However, there are some areas that could use improvement. A few reviews mentioned lingering dog hairs in the rooms and common areas, suggesting a need for more thorough cleaning. Clarity regarding the pet policy would also enhance the experience, as some guests found it not explicitly stated. Despite these minor issues, the overall sentiment remains positive with most guests finding the hotel a good spot for pets and enjoying the accommodating atmosphere created by the warm and kind staff.
