For many, Mallorca means crowded beaches and noisy resorts. But look beyond that, and you'll find an island of quiet coves, honey-coloured villages and golden hills rolling gently down to turquoise waters.

It's a place where mountain paths wind towards medieval towns, and peaceful beaches await those prepared to explore a little more. Whether you enjoy hiking, swimming, art or wine, this Balearic island offers a quieter, richer experience that makes it all worthwhile.

What to see (beyond the usual)

Escape the Palma crowds and head for the Tramuntana mountains. Deia, Valldemossa, and Fornalutx are charming spots with old stone houses, citrus groves, and a quiet feel that drew artists like Chopin and Robert Graves. Rent a car and take the scenic routes to out-of-the-way beaches like Cala Tuent, Cala Murta, or Cala Figuera.

Inland, Santanyi is a laid-back town with a local market, galleries, and proper tapas bars. If you like wine, the Binissalem wine region offers tastings in a pretty setting.

Insider tip: Hike the Camí de s’Arxiduc near Valldemossa early in the morning for great sea views and real quiet. Finish your day with a glass of Mallorcan wine at a quiet seaside spot in Port de Sóller.
