At the adults-only Hotel Rocamarina, the sustainable practices go beyond the norms to create a unique eco-friendly experience. The structure of the hotel has been designed to maximize airflow, reducing the necessity for constant air conditioning. Rainwater collection and usage systems have been put in place to optimize water usage, while non-toxic cleaning products and LED lighting throughout the premises ensure a reduced environmental impact.
Taking sustainability to a granular level, the toilets at the hotel flush up to a mere 6 litres per flush, and guests are informed through signs in the rooms that towels will only be changed upon request. Organic waste is composted, and all waste is meticulously separated into at least three categories to facilitate recycling. When it comes to energy conservation, an automatic system or key card switches off the light and electrical appliances when guests leave their rooms, and the air conditioning and heating automatically turn off when windows are open. Furthermore, a large portion of the ingredients used to prepare meals are locally sourced, and a vegetarian alternative menu is readily available at the restaurant, reducing the hotel's carbon footprint while promoting local economies.
