Questionnaire
Year erected: 1653
What is the history of the property?
The first building on Estate Shoys, where The Buccaneer is located, was constructed by Charles Martel, a Knight of Malta, all the way back in 1653. In 1733, when the Danes bought the island of St. Croix, their Governor von Prock built his home on the estate. He erected the Sugar Mill that still stands on site. The next owner was Michael Shoy, for whom the estate is named, and he began growing cotton there. After that came the Heyliger Company and its cattle ranch. The Armstrong family bought that ranch in 1922 and in 1947 opened The Buccaneer as a hotel with 11 rooms. It was the first hotel on the island to be built and operated by an island family. Now, nearly 75 years later, the resort is the oldest family-owned resort in the entire Caribbean. Elizabeth Armstrong is the third generation of her family to own and run the property.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The property has grown and expanded over the years, and the architecture of each element reflects the era in which it was built. A significant piece of history and architecture is the old Sugar Mill, which stands near the main building and which is a popular site for weddings and special, customized private dinners.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The Buccaneer is located about five minutes' drive from downtown Christiansted, which is brimming with history. The town has ties to the stories of all the people who made their homes here and nations that claimed St. Croix as theirs over the years. The most famous historic figure with ties to the area is Alexander Hamilton.
Has restoration work taken place?
Yes, over the years, restoration has taken place simply to keep buildings in good working order. For example, the Sugar Mill needs some periodic rehab. However, there has not be significant restoration.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
Again, the Sugar Mill is a fan favorite among guests, though you can find mills all over the island. It's a point of historic interest right on property and guests are fascinated by it. In non-COVID times, the hotel offers a history tour and the Sugar Mill is a highlight. The hotel's Lounge features a mural called "Fighting Ships" by noteworthy artist Stanley Stubenberg.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The first governor of the island, Governor von Prock, lived here. The resort has hosted celebrity guests over the years and continues to do so.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
See information mentioned above.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America.
