The fairytale begins in 1835 when Giovanni Delfino, a knight from Genoa, made a fortune transporting goods across the Mediterranean. As his business continued to flourish, he decided to settle in Chania permanently. Between 1840-1845, he bought a grand Venetian mansion conveniently located near the harbor.
Year built: 17TH CENTURY
What is the history of the property?
The history of Casa Delfino is a story of romance, adventure, and extraordinary twists of fate. The tale begins in 1835 with Giovanni Delfino, a knight and ship-owner from Marseille, who made his fortune transporting goods across the Mediterranean.

On one fateful trip bound for Syria, a storm cast Delfino aground at the Castle of Gramvousa on Crete. He sought refuge in the Capuchin monastery. Delfino managed to salvage his precious cargo of cod, which he sold to the locals at a handsome profit. Quick to spot a gap in the market, Delfino requested another shipment of fish to be sent from Marseille. Along with the cargo, his wife Bianca and their children, Petro and Margaritte, were also dispatched to Crete.

As Delfino’s business continued to flourish, the family decided to settle in Chania permanently. Between 1840-1860, Delfino purchased a grand Venetian mansion in the heart of town, conveniently located close to the harbour.

When Giovanni Delfino’s daughter Margaritte came of marrying age, a suitable groom was found in Marseille. So Margaritte began the long sea voyage to meet her future husband. But destiny intervened: on the way, she fell in love with the captain of the ship, who was a charming Italian. In a flash, Marseille was forgotten, and the young couple turned the ship around and returned to Chania.

The family home was given to Margaritte as part of her dowry. From then on, it became known as Casa Delfino. The happy couple raised six children in the house. All future generations continued to live in the family house, until the Second World War. Casa Delfino suffered severe damages during the German occupation. The house was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.

Eventually, in 1986, Manthos Markantonakis - a fifth generation descendant of the Delfino family - made it his mission to restore the family home to its former splendour. With great love and care, Casa Delfino was renovated, upgraded, and converted into a luxury hotel. Manthos’ ambition was to recreate the sense of a private residence in the heart of Chania.

Today, the building’s rich and colourful heritage is as much a trademark of Casa Delfino as the exceptional hospitality and elegant interiors. Period antiques and personalised service capture the authentic spirit of this timeless landmark. To this day, Casa Delfino remains a part of the original family's legacy, and is deeply engrained in their hearts.

Country House in Pasiano di Pordenone, Italy

Historic Accommodation

Dating as far back as the beginning of the 11th century, Villa Luppis used to be an old monastery of the Camaldolite monks. Due to the war between Venice and the Hapsburgs, the monastery underwent serious damages, and it was rebuilt during the 1500s. Since the 19th century, it has come to the possession of the Luppis family, who turned it into a charming guest house where diplomatic activities also took place.
Year built: 900 d.C.
What is the history of the property?
Villa Luppis: this is the name of the old monastery which was built here, by the Camaldolite monks at the beginning of the 11th century, on the confluence between the river Livenza and Meduna. Many events went by, i.e. a rebuilding in 1500 after the damages suffered during the war between the Republic of Venice and the house of Hapsburgs, and San Martino was then secularized by Napoleon at the beginning of 1800 and acquiredby the Chiozza – Luppis family. Turned into a superb country house, it came an elegant estate and was used by the family ancestors as a place where to carry out the public relations for their industrial and diplomatic activities.

Today, the Villa still recalls past times’ splendor and atmosphere. With an accurate intervention aiming at maintaining as far as possible everything unaltered, we have turned it into a 39-bedroom 4 star hotel (6 suite) with period furnishing and we have provided it with every comfort, an excellent restaurant and a relaxing piano-bar. To facilitate and enrich the stay of our guests, we have also arranged important additional services: “Guide to the territory, Shopping-card, Green fee, Ski Pass, Shuttle Bus to/from Venice”. In Villa Luppis not only do our guest find surroundings of exceptional charm, but also and above all a kind of hospitality typical of first-class hotels with something more: our friendly, not just formal approach.

Castello Di Potentino

Historic Accommodation

Year built: 1042
What is the history of the property?
he first document to mention the Castello di Potentino is dated 1042. It then belonged to a certain Count Pietrone or Pepone. However, the original foundations are probably Etruscan. Over the centuries the property passed through the hands of many well-known Tuscan families of noble descent - the Tolomei, the Bonsignori, and the the Salimbeni, whom in the company of Contessa Bianchina, received Saint Catherine of Siena as a guest at the castle. At the end of the 16th Century it became a centre for the charitable works of the hospital order of Santa Maria della Scala.

After this period of religious activity, the Medici Duke Ferdinando I conceded the estate to Marchese Giovan Battista Bourbon del Monte, famous commander-in-chief of the infantry of the Venetian Republic. His descendants finally sold the castle to a gentleman from Switzerland, Antonio Hemmeler, in 1906. Recently it was purchased and restored by the Greene family, who have given new life to the ancient traditions of the building.

The Greenes have owned properties in the Tuscan Maremma for over 30 years. Starting with a farmhouse near the coast, they gradually moved inland. Castello di Potentino is their second major project in the Grosseto area.

In 1989 the family purchased their first ruined castle – the Castello di Montepo, Scansano. Restoration was completed, vineyards planted and a winery established. After 10 years it was sold to a well-known wine producer from the Biondi Santi family. The next castle, Potentino, was discovered in an old guide book. Abandoned, dilapidated, overgrown, the potential was still apparent. It was for sale but had to be bought from 22 different people. Negotiations took a year and agreement finally reached with all the owners. In 2000, work commenced.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
late Medical early renaissance
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
no, but we are in a valley without very little modern intervention- it is very much like the land in the Sienese frescos of good and bad government.
Has restoration work taken place?
Yes- the castle was restored from near collapse in 2000
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
We have beautiful 19th Century/early 20th Century stencils on the beams and some 17th Century paintings by the altar in the chapel by the Nasini Brothers. We also have templar artefacts in the vaulting of the castle and a templar cross above the chapel entrance. Some of the vaulting is fabulous.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
Saint Catherine of Siena came to visit with the Contessa Bianchina Salimbeni on their way to Rome to visit the Pope, San Bernardino was local and Saint Francis also passed through the castle. We also believe that Caravaggio hid at Potentino although he didn't leave any canvases behind!
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?

Historic Hotel

Year built: 1000
What is the history of the property?
The Castrum was called Q.Legio, from which the name Olegio seems to derive, Olezo, named Oleggio Castello in honor of the Visconti building built around the year 1000. It was precisely from the shores of Lake Maggiore that the Visconti, around 1200, moved to the dominion of the Signoria of Milan, assumed since 1277 and which ended with the death of Filippo Maria (1447), whose only daughter Bianca was married to Francesco Sforza who continued the splendor and independence of the Duchy of Milan. In the following centuries, the castle was abandoned until a partial, but substantial destruction. Only in the mid-sixteenth century, the descendants of the Visconti, who became Aragon in 1426 by concession of King Ferdinando of Naples, recovering the remains of the Castle, they rebuilt a residential building. The marquis Alberto Visconti d'Aragona, the last of this name, was implicated for his active participation in the Carbonari uprisings and, for this, tried, sentenced to death and the expropriation of property. The properties passed to his sister Virginia, wife of Bonifazio dal Pozzo d'Annone, of Piedmontese origin, of Rovereto, later renamed Alessandria in honor of Rolando Bandinelli, Pope Alexander III in 1167. His son Claudio (1839-1885), passionate about Richard Popwell Pullan, William Burgess' s brother - in - law and follower of the Augustus Pugin school, was commissioned to redesign and restructure the structure, transforming it into a Gothic - Revival style castle surrounded by a majestic park. Next to it stands the eighteenth-century palace where Alberto Visconti d'Aragona lived until his death after being pardoned. Died in 1895, he is buried, together with his wife Donna Luigia, of the Marquis of Monticelli Obizzi, in the cemetery of Oleggio Castello. The palace was a refuge and home for many local families with the succession of the World Wars. Subsequently, when Oleggio Castello, leaving Paruzzaro became an autonomous Municipality, the Palace, by concession of the family, was for some decades the seat of the Municipal school of Oleggio Castello and later abandoned. In recent years it was renovated and meticulously transformed into a magnificent Luxury Boutique Hotel, destined to project the small and peaceful Municipality of Oleggio Castello onto the most coveted international scenario. The entire property belongs to the Dal Pozzo d'Annone family and is still the seat of the family.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
A corner of England
British art experts have defined the architecture of the Castle as one of the purest examples of the Gothic Revival, very popular in the Victorian era. The Marquis Claudio Dal Pozzo d 'Annone was a passionate scholar of the 16th century Gothic style and the Castle reflects this artistic passion. Outside the castle has a very compact physiognomy. The grandiose landscaping emphasizes it all. The 24-hectare park is surrounded by rare arboreal essences of great botanical interest. The entrance porch, the chapel, the massive square tower from the east, the small octagonal tower on the south-western corner, reveal the spirit of the Anglo-Saxon style. The architecture blends with the typical internal decoration of the period: the stained glass windows of the windows of the apse of the chapel, the wrought iron gates taken from Scottish models, low reliefs set on the external walls of the building, coats of arms and sculptures of various origins . The careful study and loving care for the execution of every detail is clear. The stencils on the walls, the decorations of the tiles and the decorations of the furniture, bring to the spirit and cultural climate of the artistic movement called 'Gothic Revival' and are taken from the book of drawings 'Of Ecclesiastical Monuments' by Augustus Pugin, upon whose death He was succeeded by architects of the caliber of William Burgess and then William Morris whose movement called 'Arts and Crafts' influenced architecture, interior design and decorative arts. Although the Gothic Revival style uses simple forms with decorations taken from the medieval era, it could be argued that the movement already lays the foundations of modern design.
