Former Castle Hotel
Dating as far back as the 15th century, the castle was initially known as Darnhall and featured fortifications and towers that helped fend off the attacks of any invading armies. In the early 18th century, the castle's facade was revamped in a Jacobean style, so as to resemble a French chateau more closely and become more modern and closer to the architectural standards of the time. Although the castle has been renovated before being turned into a hotel, it still maintains some of its historic elements, such as the remains of a vaulted cellar that can still be seen from the hotel's entrance.

Former Castle Hotel
The very first written records of Melville Castle date as far back as the 12th century, when it was used as the personal estate of the Governor of Edinburgh Castle. During the 16th century, Mary Stuart, also known as Queen of Scots, was a frequent visitor to the Melville Castle when she returned to Scotland after becoming a widow in France. In the 19th century, Queen Victoria was also a guest in Melville Castle, an estate which mesmerised her. The famous writer Sir Walter Scott was also inspired by the majestic estate to write a story. After the death of its then owners, the castle fell into disarray until the 1990s when it was restored to its former glory and opened as a hotel.
