Summary of reviews related to the 'Historic' categoryIf you're a fan of historical buildings, Hotel Villa Westend is the perfect choice for your stay in Meran. The hotel is a beautiful old villa that has maintained its old-world charm and elegance. Guests feel transported back in time to the days when Meran was a renowned Austro-Hungarian spa town and a favorite destination of the Empress Sissi. The rooms and breakfast room are all impressive thanks to the old villa and its beautiful gardens. The hotel has a beautiful historical atmosphere with charming references to Meran's great times as a world-class spa town. From the thick carpets, creaking parquet, curious double doors and plush furniture, this hotel is truly unique and a step away from the norm. The hotel is beautiful both inside and out and the staff is friendly and helpful. If you prefer a classic style and want to breathe the elegant atmosphere of old-time Merano, then Hotel Villa Westend is highly recommended.

Questionnaire
Year erected: 1890
What is the history of the property?
The Hotel was built in 1890 as a private Villa by the then-famous local architect Pietro Delugan. It would serve as a perfect example of his art and skill: it had one of the most beautiful facades Merano could boast at that time. The building is now justly recognised as a true Art Nouveau jem and has been listed since 1984.

The Villa Westend, pleasantly situatetd along the cool, shady river-side walk once known as the Stefanie Promenade (now Passer Promenade), was sold to the Pöder family in 1907. They managed it as a guest house through the troubeld times of two World Wars and the very unsettled period that followed. Many of famous guests have spent their holidays at the Westend, including the German poet Gottfried Benn, who wrote many letters and poems to freinds and family during his stay.

The Strohmer family have long been active in the hotel and catering business; they already own the Hotel Europa Splendid. They bought the Villa Westend Hotel 1983 and remodernised it completely with both taste and style, respecting the original "art nouveau style". The Westend was awarded 3-stars in 1986.

The hotel has a delightful garden along the river and is in a quiet yet central position, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. It is ideal for a truly relaxing holiday. Our guests often remark on the comfortable, cosy atmosphere, the spacious airy rooms, the exellent home–cooking, the attentive service and the warm welcome they always receive from the owners and staff.

Questionnaire
Year erected: 1883
What is the history of the property?
Two lions at the entrance gate and the Bavarian royal coat of arms in the entrance hall of the Hotel Bavaria commemorate the Wittelsbach Carl Theodor, Duke in Bavaria and favourite brother of Empress Elisabeth-Sissi. The Villa Bavaria was built in 1883 and in 1885 the ducal entourage moved to the newly built Villa Bavaria in Merano, while Dr. Carl Theodor took up his work as an ophthalmologist in the nearby medical centre, now the Hotel Palma. His stays as well as the visits of Empress Sissi contributed greatly to the fame of the health resort and helped the town on the river Passer to international fame. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bavarian reminiscence was then converted into a hotel. Several extensions followed over the decades. Almost everything has been renovated and modernised in the meantime. Today, the hotel is owned by the Berger family of doctors and enchants guests with its unmistakable flair and warm hospitality.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
Belle Époque / Historism
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The hotel is located only 700m from the centre of Merano in the historic villa district of Obermais/Maia alta surrounded by a magnificent park with palm trees and mighty cedars.
Has restoration work taken place?
In recent decades, partial renovations and restorations have always taken place in the Hotel Bavaria during the closed period (winter).
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The south front is listed as a historic monument.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The Wittelsbacher Carl Theodor, Duke in Bavaria and favourite brother of Empress Elisabeth-Sissi was the first owner of the newly built Villa Bavaria in 1883. His sister Empress Sissi visited him several times in the Villa Bavaria during her stays in Merano.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
