The first building was built by Daniel Scott, the first harbour master, as a warehouse for the new city. In the building's infancy, it was used as a temporary place to house the first 75 convicts that arrived in 1850 during the construction of the then-new Fermantle Prison. In 1895, the building welcomed its first guest. Throughout the years, it was expanded and polished to meet the increasing demand. Nowadays, the hotel remembers its rich history by calling itself the "Harbour Master".
