Is there anything that you would like to highlight, add or clarify?
We joined the EU energy efficiency program in 2018 and took on extensive renovations and developments in our resort. Now, the energy use in our resort and apartments is highly automated. We reduce energy consumption by optimizing temperature control and ventilation, among other things. We have installed a highly efficient management system that automatically regulates airflow and heat uptake based on carbon dioxide levels.

We are surrounded by six hectares of forest, which provides not only privacy, but also a significant carbon sink that absorbs approximately 22 tonnes of carbon every year. We even do our own snow removal to minimize our carbon footprint. We provide transport services for our guests with a new minibus, which creates lower emissions than taxi rides.

We are committed to cutting down our emissions from heating and energy consumption as much as possible while also being economically sustainable. We recycle 100% of our waste. All organic waste is composted and used in our veggie garden, which is fertilized exclusively with organic products.

Most of our heating comes from the ground underneath our resort through geothermal pumps. Multiple ASHPs help as well. We’ve also switched to using the highly efficient LED light sources and have equipped our kitchen with the latest and most efficient technology available.

We aim to produce and source our ingredients with the utmost care for the environment for our Restaurant Aihki. We farm most of our vegetables on our own property. A great deal of the fish we use comes from Lake Pyhäjärvi. With the rest, we try to make sure that everything travels the shortest distance possible. This allows us to always have the freshest, most local ingredients we can have and generate the least amount of emissions from our food. We minimize food waste by preparing everything to order and according to your wishes, allergies, and diet.

Our linen is made with the best natural fibers and we do all of our laundry in-house. This allows us to employ locals directly and eliminate any emissions from transporting laundry.

We prioritize utilizing the latest technologies in our services. Our customers have access to seven electric vehicle charging stations (type 2) as well as electric mountain bikes for exercise. We’re especially proud of our electric snowmobiles. Only two other companies in the world have access to these entirely silent, zero-emission sleds for snowmobile safaris. We prioritize charging our sleds at night and will be using them as power points to mitigate spikes in electricity consumption: by offloading to the grid when needed, we’re further optimizing our energy consumption.

We also have a network of partners that help us provide various outdoor activities in the Pyhä region. All of these services are emission-free. The closer your services are, the fewer emissions they create. For us, sustainable development is an ongoing process. There is always something we can do better, and we encourage ourselves, our staff and our customers to keep this in mind. We invest, learn and educate. Although technology allows new advances and increasingly better ways to protect the environment, we people will always be needed for change. Our goal is to promote development through people and actions.

Environmental Protection
The entire property is part of the “Rede Natura 2000“.
This special protection zone created by UNESCO in 1998 aims to protect extremely rare species such as the Great Bustard, the Little Bustard, or the lesser Kestrel, the agricultural practices identified and encouraged by it are fully complied with in the "Malhadinha Nova".
The sustainability and environmental protection measures supported by European funds cover different practices, such as organic production, efficient use of water, extensive breeding of native breeds, grazing, traditional olive groves, among others.
Good agricultural practices are based on respect for ecosystems in the "Malhadinha", privileging the harmonious coexistence between the various species.
The production of honey and the maintenance of around 30 beehives in permanent activity also contribute decisively to the balance of the "Malhadinha" ecosystem.
As in 2020, the 2021 wine labels had Avifauna as their theme, but in an even more detailed way, since each design depicts a species of bird that is part of this natural heritage so favorable to its creation, development, and preservation.
For 2022, scientific illustrations of insects are already under development, together with the Illustrator of the Nature Protection League, and the drawings will be recreations of the most relevant species for the balance of the "Malhadinha" ecosystem.
Together with the "Castro Verde Sustentável" program, the "Malhadinha Nova" is working on identifying the most important species, which will be designed by the illustrator and portrayed on the labels by the children of the Soares family, according to the tradition since the Farm's first wine, for nearly two decades.
The entire 455 hectares of the property were converted to a biological regime in 2017, having acquired official certification in 2020. The wines that reached the market in 2021 are already fully organic.
This means applying good agricultural practices, such as the natural fertilization of the soil using manure and auxiliary crops, the natural cutting of infesting weeds using sheep grazing at certain seasons, the use of rose bushes as they were used to detect diseases in the vines.
Species such as broad beans, lupine, clover, planted in the vineyards, serve both to naturally supply nitrogen to the land and to create a perfect habitat for the various species.
The reuse of natural manure produced on the property for fertilizing the vineyards is another of the practices carried out for many years at HMN.
More recently, the planting of vegetable curtains of various species around the different vineyards to attract and fix auxiliary species in the fight against pests, or the introduction of natural predators in the ecosystem, demonstrates our intention to deepen and improve the sustainability subject.

Hotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
The eco-conscious Apeiros Chora is highly acclaimed for its commitment to sustainable practices, having received recognition such as TripAdvisor GreenLeaders and the Booking Sustainable Hotels certification. An impressive aspect of the hotel's eco-friendly strategy is their renewable energy source - Biomass. This, along with a conscientious selection of sustainable building materials, reinforces their commitment to environmental sustainability. Each architectural detail, from the strategic structuring to maximise airflow and natural light, to the installation of triple-glazed windows, is meticulously designed to conserve energy.

Apeiros Chora's active role in eco-friendly initiatives such as reforestation and wildlife conservation is admirable. Efficient utilization of collected rainwater, coupled with the usage of environmentally friendly cleaning products, contributes to a healthy and sustainable environment at the hotel. Moreover, the hotel restaurant offers mouth-watering meals prepared with primarily local and organic ingredients, giving guests the opportunity to engage in sustainable gastronomy. The establishment is tastefully lit with LED lighting, providing an energy-saving solution that not only reduces carbon footprint but also creates a warm and welcoming ambiance throughout the property. Furthermore, an environmental manager, assigned specifically for the task, makes certain that all employees are thoroughly trained and consistently adhere to the hotel's eco-friendly guidelines. The hotel's toilets are designed for water conservation, using no more than 6 litres per flush, and signs inform guests that towels will only be changed upon request. The initiative extends to an in-house wastewater treatment facility, an essential part of the hotel's environmental policies. In the quest to reduce waste, no disposable cups, glasses, plates, or cutlery are used, and the toilet paper is either non-chlorine bleached or awarded with an eco-label. Apeiros Chora truly exemplifies the idea of a sustainable vacation haven.
