Hotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
The Loch Melfort Hotel, steeped in its commitment to environmental responsibility, has initiated a range of sustainable practices aimed at minimizing their environmental footprint. The hotel replaced older boilers with a wood pellet boiler, significantly reducing their carbon emissions, and installed a substantial wood pellet store to minimize delivery frequency. To reduce 'food miles', meals are prepared using locally-sourced produce from farmers practicing closed cycle systems, while seafood is sourced from nearby Argyll. Conscious of waste management, the hotel utilizes refillable pump dispensers, significantly reducing plastic waste, and has installed low-energy light bulbs throughout the premises. Additionally, water supply comes directly from a local spring, delivering the freshest water to each room.

Loch Melfort Hotel has made substantial strides in their environmental practices, including the utilization of an organic reed bed sewerage system, dual flush cisterns in toilets, and recycling of old linens. Vegetable waste from the kitchen is composted on-site, and general refuse is divided per local authority guidelines. The hotel's garden hosts a diverse array of wildlife, while resident goats and Highland cattle naturally maintain the grassy areas. Local tradespeople are employed for all building and restoration projects, reaffirming the hotel's commitment to the local community. Moreover, the hotel recently installed its first E-car charging point, showing its openness to emerging sustainable technologies. Loch Melfort's impressive dedication to environmental sustainability was recognized with a Silver Award from Green Tourism, a testament to their exceptional environmental efforts.

Our water supply comes from a local spring behind the hotel. We use filters and
UV treatment to produce the freshest spring water direct to each room.

We ask our guests to reuse their towels where possible to save water and energy.

Kitchen vegetable waste is recycled to our own purpose built compost pens.

We have moved from individual Scottish luxury bathroom miniatures to refillable
pump dispensers, helping to reduce plastic bottles to landfill by 97%!

in 2021, we replaced our two 30 year old boilers with a 150kW biomass wood
pellet heat cabin, which now supplies all hot water and heating to the hotel.
The cabin is a huge step in reducing our carbon footprint and improving on our
existing green credentials. To help further improve our sustainability, our Biomass Heat Cabin uses locally sourced Scottish wood pellets. To accompany our new pellet boiler, we’ve added a 20 tonne wood pellet store, helping to reduce the number of deliveries needed to our remote location, further increasing carbon savings.

In summer 2020, we installed our firstE-car charge point. We can now be found on the official Charge Place Scotland map.

We purchase quality local produce from as close to Arduaine as possible,
turning ‘Food Miles’ into ‘Food Metres’. Our Chef also seeks out farmers who use the closed cycle system. We have our own garden where we grow our own vegetables and herbs to use seasonally in dishes in our restaurant.

veggie/vegan/dairy/gluten free menus are available and we are always
working to ensure that these are as enticing as our normal menus!

We are donors to a local oyster regeneration project.

Loch Melfort has its own goats – Bramble and Thistle; and Highland Cattle
– Campbell, MacDonald and Dougal; who keep the grass in the fields well
cropped and fertilized.

Loch Melfort Hotel and NTS ArduaineGardens have a long standing relationship.
We have been supporting the gardens forover 12 years.

Hotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
One Aldwych, since its establishment in 1998, has placed paramount importance on sustainability, consistently innovating with energy saving, heat reclaim, and water efficiency features. A notable environmental measure the hotel has taken is the installation of the EVAC drainage system, a highly efficient mechanism that conserves water by reducing consumption by 70% compared to conventional systems. This commitment to eco-conscious operation extends to its responsibility towards the environment, staff, and local community, and is validated by the hotel's proud membership with the Considerate Group.

The passion for sustainability is evident in the hotel's diverse eco-friendly initiatives. New rooftop beehives and a bee-friendly garden contribute to urban bee health, while a chlorine-free pool operates with a mineral-based cleaning system. The hotel's comprehensive recycling policy emphasizes reducing, reusing, and recycling, with specific measures like the removal of all plastic straws and stirrers, and the use of a glass crusher to recycle bottles into 'glassphalt' and concrete. A unique in-house water filtration and bottling plant eradicates the need for single-use bottles and cuts down on carbon emissions linked to water transport.

Energy management is reinforced through LED lighting and selection of energy-efficient equipment. Their purchasing policy gives preference to organic, sustainable, low energy, and ethical products. The hotel's food waste is composted on a farm where vegetables for the hotel's restaurant are grown, thereby promoting a table-to-farm-to-table dining concept. Amenities in rooms are natural, paraben-free, and come in biodegradable packaging. As a part of their commitment to social responsibility, they also support independent charities such as StreetSmart and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.
